1. Tom Ford Lip Color 28 Rouge Fatal ($49)
This is the most luxurious of the bunch -- and thus the most expensive. It is extremely creamy upon application so I recommend using a lip liner to prevent bleeding and small strokes to prevent sliding right off your lips and onto your face. It is a slightly darker red with some shine (but not glitters) and not too opaque. This was a definite splurge but I like how wearable it is -- and I love the packaging of it too.
This is a very interesting product -- it applies like a glossy lipstick but dries to a complete matte. It applies very creamy but can get very dry (which can get irritating) after a while so be sure to moisturize your lips beforehand. Also, this doesn't look good if you have chapped lips because it emphasizes the flaky skin and looks chunky. Overall, very affordable and very opaque coverage -- money well spent.
3. MAKE UP FOR EVER Rouge Artist Intense 43 Moulin Rouge ($20)
Very similar to the Tom Ford lipstick in terms of color, shine, and sheerness; however, this lipstick applies less smoothly which allows for more control -- you don't need a lipliner for this one. This is also slightly brighter (and ever so slightly more opaque) than the Tom Ford lipstick but still very wearable (most true red of the bunch). This is half the price of the Tom Ford lipstick and is very comparable -- I recommend this one if you're on a budget but want something that feels high-end.
4. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture SPF 15 Pure Colour Satiny Radiance 04 Rouge Vermillon ($34)
This is my absolute favorite lipstick to wear because it is very close to my natural lip color -- but better -- and feels really good on the lips. It is less bold than the other reds and more of a raspberry color. It is a bit sheer but definitely buildable for more color. It seems to stay on top of my lips, which means it gets smeared everywhere (cups, straws, napkins, spoons, etc.); however, it leaves a tiny bit of a stain, which makes it look like my natural lip color (but better). I recommend this to those who want a nice demure red lip, opposed to an obvious in-your-face red lip.
5. NYX Matte Lipstick 18 Bloody Mary ($6)
The brightest shade of red in the bunch (slightly hot pink) -- very similar to the NYX soft matte lip cream in terms of color and finish (the lip cream dries to a complete matte though). When you layer the two, the red becomes very opaque and thick. I recommend this lipstick if you don't want to spend a lot of money and will only wear this a few times throughout the year. Doesn't apply very creamy which allows for more control.
6. Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter 035 Candy Apple ($6.50)
This is the first red lip product I ever bought. I never thought that I would enjoy red on my lips until I tried this lip butter. This is extremely sheer (but buildable) and leaves a moisturizing shine -- great for first timers who feel that red is too daring and bold. You get a very slight red tint on your lips for a just-bitten/juicy look.
Which red is your favorite?
