Food Friday >> Kamu Sushi

I'm so excited to share this new place with you all. It just opened in South San Francisco and it's fast becoming one of my new favorite sushi restaurants. It's a really small place (max occupancy is 30) but the food quality and presentation is just amazing. It's BETTER than Amami because all the fish and meat is fresh and organic! I happen to know the owner so I know this to be true! He wakes up every morning to buy the fish himself and he spent 10 months renovating the place himself -- such dedication. His commitment to the restaurant's brand and character can also be seen on the wooden serving plates, which has Kamu Sushi engraved on it. The staff is very friendly and they even offer you tea/water when you're waiting outside. My only complaint is that since this place is so small, wait times might be an issue if you come during a busy time, and the wait for food to come out can be a bit long as well. But, it's absolutely worth the wait! Now without any further a due, let's get into the food!
Kumamoto Oysters
We ordered a dozen oysters and they were so delicious and creamy. The jelly stuff is a yuzu sauce and it's topped with a bit of kelp caviar.
Himalayan Salted Kama
My family loves hamachi Kama. We always order this dish whenever we eat at a Japanese restaurant. When judging this dish, I always look for texture and flavor - the meat wasn't tough, but moist and juicy - and the flavor is usually just lightly salted but the Himalayan salt block underneath gave it an added salty flavor - very well executed.
Yamaimo Uni
I usually do not order uni but my sister highly recommended this dish so I decided to try it. It was absolutely amazing! Melts in your mouth!!
Smok'in Sake Belly
This was probably the most interactive and interesting dish in my opinion. The salmon belly is smoked inside the glass orb with applewood smoke. After a few minutes, you remove the glass and lay the salmon belly flat on the Himalayan salt block - the smoky flavor and the melted salt gives the salmon such unique flavor that it is recommended that you do not eat it with soy sauce. We ordered two. Must try!
Hotate (scallop) Sashimi
Very delicious and fresh. It did not have that nasty ocean flavor so you can definitely taste the scallop flavor and the texture was creamy and somewhat crunchy (not mushy).
Wagyu On Fire
This sushi roll had great flavor. The sauce is lit on fire and when the flame dies out, you pour some soy sauce into the dish, then you pour the mixture on top of the roll. Overall, very tasty!
Cast Iron Pan Sea Bass
This was my least favorite dish because it was a bit bland. However, if you like eating cooked fish instead of raw fish then I would recommend you get this because the sauce is different than the usual oyster sauce/soy sauce/sugar/black bean sauce that the other restaurants use.
Hamachi Belly Sashimi
So good! Melts in your mouth!
Albacore (White Tuna) Belly Tataki
Surprisingly very tasty and great texture! I normally would not order this fish because I don't really like tuna nor the texture, but the combination of the sauce, scallions, tobiko, and pepper added great flavor to the slightly seared fish.

We also ordered two Dragon Rolls, which were also very good! I liked how the shrimp tempura inside was still crunchy when you bite into it, the avocado was fresh (green), and the eel was very tasty (not mushy and full of bones). Another cool thing about this place is that you can create your own sushi roll - perfect for those who know just what they want inside/outside their sushi rolls - another great interactive dish. We also ordered three orders of the tobiko nigiri (my sisters' favorite) and an order of the Shoyu Garlic Edamame. We were absolutely stuffed by the end of the night!

No desserts yet but they're working on that. The owner/chef said they're trying to create a healthy dessert than fits into the Kamu menu. I suggested ice cream but he said no - "too fat". I guess I'll have to go back and see what he comes up with!

If you want quality over quantity, and you don't mind paying for it, this is definitely the place for you!
