Food Friday >> Himawari

Another interesting, not very hyped about place to get ramen is Himawari in San Mateo. I really like the texture of their ramen noodles, chewy, and not mushy. I especially love the stewed pork and the gigantic layer of fat that surrounds the meat -- I try not to eat it all but it's so tasty! I didn't really like the agedashi tofu because of the thick batter and the lack of taste from the sauce -- however, Eric enjoyed it. We shared the deluxe ramen in soy broth -- trust me, it's large enough to share if you order an appetizer and side as well. The sliced roasted pork aka "cha siew" was actually quite dry, I don't remember if it was dry the last time I had it, maybe I just came on an off-day for cha siew -- I was disappointed with it needless to say. But the stewed pork, still as fatty and tender as ever -- definitely a must try! I don't like bamboo but I do love seaweed and the roasted seaweed gives a very rich flavor to the mild broth.

The decor of the restaurant is a little strange/inconsistent to me as this is a Japanese cuisine-inspired place but the decor is old records/vinyls on the wall. I sense a disconnect there but perhaps they are dating back to the military World War II days when the Americans were in Japan -- shrug. The staff are pretty nice but don't come around often and they all wear very cute Himawari t-shirts. I would love to try the fried rice and the tofu salad next time. Any other suggestions?

Food Friday >> Dining in Denver and Aspen

We went to a couple of restaurants while visiting Denver and Aspen -- here are my top picks from each city!

Denver, CO
While in Denver, Colorado, we stumbled across this little place, Welton St. Cafe, just outside of downtown Denver. I really liked how traditional the food was prepared -- and the variations in sides from fried okra to macaroni and cheese. They describe their food as southern homestyle with a Caribbean twist!
It had really good reviews on yelp so we decided to give it a try
Beef and cheese pate >> it's like an empanada but with a fried dough, very tasty and unique
Combo plate >> fried chicken, fried catfish, mashed potatoes with gravy, macaroni and cheese, and sweet roll

I'm not going to lie, we received quite a few stares/looks because we had a group of 14, mostly Chinese, and we were still in our snow jackets/coats. Even though we stuck out like a sore thumb, the waitress was still pretty nice to us -- she had some attitude, but not rude. She asked, "How did you even find this place?" We responded, "yelp". I'm not surprised that they were surprised to see us because I didn't see a single Chinese person while I was in Denver -- we are a rare breed.
The food took a while to come out simply because we had so many people -- however, there were no mistakes at all, and everyone received what they ordered all around the same time. I would recommend the pates, they're really tasty and different from anything I've tried. I really don't think you can find something similar in San Francisco, at least, not from the places I've been to like Hard Knox and The Fremont Diner. Since we ordered the combo plate, we didn't get half a fried chicken like the others who only ordered fried chicken, we got fried wings instead. The fried chicken was fried well but no real taste/seasoning, which some people may find bland. The fried catfish was really delicious and nice flaky texture inside, I wish it came with more! The sides were really yummy too, I especially liked the macaroni and cheese. The sweet roll was just okay -- I still prefer the hawaiian sweet rolls much more.

Aspen, CO
We asked around and many of the Aspen natives recommended The Red Onion. Aspen didn't have a lot of bars and this one was a bar/restaurant, so the guys enjoyed that.
The dining area is quite small but there were a lot of large families eating here - including our group of 14
Cup of buffalo chili with flour tortilla
Ribeye cheese steak sandwich with a side of roasted veggies
Pulled pork and cheddar sandwich with a side house salad

This place was very reminiscent of BJ's to me, the food, family-friendly atmosphere, and the large TV showing the Olympics. The waiters were so nice and accommodating, they had to keep going around the kitchen to the other entryway to serve the other end of the table since we were all pretty squeezed inside the dining area. The menu is a bit limited but very cohesive -- I would describe the food as American/Mexican. I enjoyed my cheesesteak sandwich but it was a bit dry -- I would have preferred a but more moisture from the peppers and onions. Eric enjoyed his cup of chili and the pulled pork sandwich -- however, he couldn't finish the sandwich (which meant that the portions were pretty decent)!
PS, just read online that The Red Onion is actually a historical landmark built in 1892!

What's Up Wednesday >> Skiing in Aspen

I went to Aspen a few weeks ago and wanted to share my experience with you all! The cabin we rented had a lovely breathtaking view -- and we got to build snowmen in the backyard!

We did our skiing+snowboarding activities at the Snowmass Ski Resort, which was only ten minutes from the cabin. Also, there is a bus that goes to the resort if you don't want to drive (PS the buses in Aspen are all free!) It was my first time skiing so obviously, I was excited+nervous all the way up the mountain.
Welcome!
Ski lift to go up/down the mountain
Restaurants + shops
The gondola made me a bit nauseous -- do not stand up and swing! Up up and away!

Since it was my first time skiing, I decided to take ski lessons! The beginner magic package includes an all-day lesson, ski+boot+helmet rental, and poles. Goggles had to be purchased separately and they're quite expensive to me (at least $50). The beginners also get to hangout in the beginner magic lounge with snacks, hot chocolate, and tea/coffee. I just stayed in the meadows the whole day because I was too scared to try out the other slopes; but my friends had a good time trying out the different slopes and some of them even trekked allll the way to the top where it was about 10,000 ft above ski level!
 I'm skiing!

Ride back down the mountain

Overall it was an amazing experience! The staff were all very friendly and the ski/snowboard instructors were all very patient and understanding. Every time I saw a little boy or girl zip right past me I felt so embarrassed -- they are so good! I highly recommend this ski resort -- it was beautiful and everything I imagined. The snow was also very nice and soft -- I only fell two times -- I was more sore from using the poles than the actual fall. Can't wait for the next ski trip!

Makeup Monday >> Blue Eyes Inspired by Jennifer Lopez

I was watching American Idol and I couldn't stop staring at Jennifer Lopez -- everything was so spot on, especially the deep v-cut dress.
 She looks absolutely amazing!
Close up of her makeup -- blue eyeshadows and nude lipstick/gloss.

Here is my take on her makeup look from Season 13, Episode 11, enjoy!
I used the 2nd and 3rd blue from one of my old Nordstrom palettes.
